Step 1 – Set-up the game
You will need flash cards with pictures and matching word cards, we found a good selection of printable flashcards on www.activityvillage.co.uk. The first step is to use a tabletop to set up a grid of flash cards. You may choose to keep it small to begin with, for example you could lay out a 3 x 3 grid with the image flash cards facing upwards. You will also need a timer, we used a 2-minute sand timer when memorizing the cards, and we then used a digital timer to time how long it took to complete the game.
Step 2 – Lay out the matching words and memorize the cards
Ask the player lay the matching word card on top of each image. This will give younger players an opportunity to learn the words by associating them with the picture cards. The next step is to start the sand timer, which will give the player two minutes to memorize where each image is located within the grid.
Step 3 – Turn over the image cards and gather the word cards
The next step is to gather the word cards into a pile and shuffle them. Then turn each of the image cards so they are facing downwards.
Step 4 – Start the game
As the player starts the game they will start a timer. The player must look at the first word card in their hand and place it over the image card that they believe to be the correct match. They can then turn over the image card to see if they got the correct card.
If they turned over an incorrect matching card they must turn the card upside down again and place the word card at the bottom of their pile. They must repeat these steps until all of their word cards have been successfully placed on the correct image cards.
When all of their cards have been successfully placed and when all of the image cards have been tuned over the player may stop the timer and record their time.
Step 5 – Try to beat your personal best
The player can play the game multiple times and set themselves goals to beat their best recorded time!
