Step 1 – Assemble materials and map out ideas

The first step is to source a set of wooden peg dolls. You will also need thin paint brushes and a selection of acrylic paints. Once you have your materials you can decide on the characters that you are going to create, or you may choose to represent your own family!

Step 2 – Sketch the outline of the characters

Sketch the outline of the characters face and clothes onto the dolls using a light pencil. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect as you can paint over it later on.

Step 3 – Paint each character

Painting peg dolls can become quite a delicate painting project and may become time consuming if you add a lot of detail but it is a thoroughly enjoyable task! Have fun mixing paint shades, if you are creating a character based on someone you know, it’s fun to try to replicate their hair style and hair colour!

Step 4 – Assemble your characters into groups or families
