Step 1: Prepare the materials
You will need a glass jar, a jug of water, paper and crayons to create a design or writing.
Step 2: Create a design on paper
The first step is to ask the children to create an image or a design on paper. Ensure that the design is a suitable fit for the width of the glass.
A good idea is to draw a picture of a person or character that is holding something in one hand, for example they could be holding a lollipop or a sword.
Step 3: Place the image behind the glass jar
The next step is to place the image approximately 6 inches behind the glass jar. You may have a stand that the image can sit on which will enable the children to watch from the front of the glass.
Step 4: Pour water into the glass jar
Before starting this step, ask the children to take note of which side of the image the person or character is holding the item. In our image, a girl was holding an ice-pop in her left hand.
The next step is to take a jug of water, slowly pour the water into the glass jar and allow the children to watch as the image magically reverses to the opposite side, the girl is now holding the ice-pop in her right hand!
Step 5: Repeat the experiment
For the final step the children can repeat the experiment and can explore the concept of water refraction.
After the water has been poured you can ask the children to move their heads from left to right and they will have great fun viewing the funny image through the glass as their image will begin to distort and stretch, similar to convex and concave mirrors at the funfair!
