Step 1: Gather the materials
The volcano explosion project requires a little bit of preparation with common household items. A plastic box works well as a container for the project and it minimizes the tidy-up.
You can use salt dough or play dough to build up around a plastic bottle to create the volcano. The landscape scene can be created using some items from the garden along with a few toy dinosaurs.
And finally the volcano recipe includes water, baking soda, food dye, washing up liquid and vinegar.
Step 2: Make the salt dough
We started by making a large quantity of salt dough, the ratio for salt dough is 4 cups of plain flour to 2 cups of salt, and then approximately 1 cup of water and knead the mixture into a dough.
Step 3: Build the volcano
This is the fun part! Children can make their own volcano creation. We used a base of green felt within our plastic box and placed a plastic water bottle in the middle.
Children can then build the salt dough around the plastic bottle to create a volcano. They can use items from the garden including stones and branches to build up their volcanic landscape. Finally they may choose to add some dinosaurs to the setting.
Step 4: Create the volcanic explosion
Once the volcanic landscape has been completed it is time to create an explosion experiment! The steps are simple:
- Fill the plastic water bottle with warm water
- Add 4 tsp baking soda
- Add a few drops of a coloured food dye of your choice
- Add a dash of washing up liquid
- When you want the explosion to occur just pour in vinegar
After a few seconds you will see the “volcanic lava” bubble out of the volcano!
