Step 1 – Print love heart templates
The first step is to print out templates for large love hearts. We found lovely heart templates on www.activityvillage.co.uk. Once you have printed the template, lay the paper with the template design facing up and sellotape the corners of the white paper onto a table.
Step 2 – Place contact paper over the templates
You will need contact paper for this step. Cut a rectangle of contact paper in a similar size to the template paper, peel off the top layer of the contact paper and place it over the template paper, with sticky side up, and sellotape the corners of the contact paper onto the table. You will now see the shape of the love heart templates through the contact paper.
Step 3 – Cut up tissue paper
The next step is to get a selection of tissue paper and use a scissors to cut the tissue paper into small rectangle shapes. You can group the tissue paper by colour and then place it in containers.
Step 4 – Design the love hearts
This step can be enjoyed by children of all ages. Once the template and contact paper has been set up children can use the tissue paper to design their own love hearts. They may choose to design a pattern or alternatively they may wish to fill the template with mixed colours.
Step 5 – Seal the love hearts
When the design is complete, cut out another piece of contact paper approximately the same size as the love heart template. Peel off the top layer of the contact paper and lay it facing sticky side down on the finished love heart designs. Gently pat out and flatten the contact paper in order for it to neatly seal against the underneath layer of contact paper.
Step 6 – Draw around the shape of the love heart with permanent marker
Once the contact paper has been sealed, you can choose to use a permanent marker to draw the shape of the template on the contact paper. If older children are doing the cutting themselves this will make it easier to follow the shape outline.
Step 7 -Cut out the shape of the love hearts
Use a scissors to cut out each individual love heart. A hole punch can then be used to create a small hole on the top of each love heart.
Step 8 – Display the Valentine’s Day sun catchers
Thread ribbon through each love heart and display them within a window. The light will shine though to bring out the beautiful colours within the tissue paper!
