Step 1 – Prepare the materials
This is a really simple project to set up, all you need are some stones and green, white and orange paint.
Step 2 – Paint the stones
Children will love to use their own imagination to paint the stones. They may choose to copy the Irish flag or simply choose a single colour. Once the paint has dried they can paint patterns on top. A shamrock design can easily be created by dipping a paint brush into paint and then gently tipping the side of the paintbrush off the stone. Repeat this process for each of the 3 shamrock leaves and then paint a thin line for the shamrock stem.
Step 3 – Try painting with sponges
Sponges are great for little hands! Simply dip the sponge in paint and let the little ones join in the fun. Also try using a sponge to dab designs onto a stone that has been already painted in a single colour.
Step 4 – Try paint marbling
Another fun technique is paint marbling. Try taking a stone and simply roll it through a sequence of paints and observe the beautiful swirling pattern that emerges!
Step 5 – Use the stones in lots of ways
Once your stones are complete they can be used in lots of ways. They can be used decorative items or as paper weights. Alternatively they can be used in games such as hide-and-go-seek games or they could be used for a St. Patrick’s Day treasure trail.
