Step 1: Set up the project
The biggest part of this project is collecting all of the items to use. Children will enjoy exploring to gather lots of small toys that can be used in the project including wooden train sets, toy cars, toy trains, playground equipment, construction equipment and mini people.
Step 2: Build the train set
Children will love becoming engineers to build the train set, putting multiple train sets together will build a bigger landscape and will encourage children to problem-solve how to use different train sets together.
Children will also have fun finding all of their toy trains, linking trains together and specifying different trains for different jobs.
Step 3: Construct grass and natural landscape areas
You can create grass areas in your landscape by using pieces of green felt. The grass areas can be used to build natural landscape areas. Having collected twigs and branches from outdoors, these can be used to create trees by placing them in small pieces of playdough. Small stones can also be used to support the base.
Step 4: Develop areas with different services
Children will love identifying which services might be required in train land, for example, fire brigade services, police services and construction services. They will have fun going through their toys and separating their toys into each category; younger children will see it as a fun matching game.
Once the toys have been separated into each category, the children can design their own areas in train land for each service. For example, they can build a fleet of police cars and station all of their policemen in the police department area. Similarly, they can build a fleet of fire engine vehicles and design the area here the fire station will reside.
The children can also place various areas where construction is taking place. They can place construction workers involved in busy construction activity across multiple areas of train land.
Step 5: Time to play
Once train land has been built it’s time to play. The children can create endless adventures in train land where lots of emergencies can occur! Trying recreating a train crash which damages the tracks, the fire brigade and police services can arrive promptly on scene. Following the crash, construction workers can play and important role in rebuilding the tracks to get train land up and running again!
