Project Details: Sensory Letter Writing Game
Materials: |
A tray or plastic container |
A sheet of A4 white paper |
Fine decorative sand or stones |
Beads or blocks with individually printed letters |
Step 1 – Prepare the materials
The first step is to set up a box or a tray. We used a plastic container and placed a sheet of A4 paper on the base of the container. Once the paper has been laid down, create a layer of fine sand or stones on the base of the container. If you do not have sand or stones available you could also try to cover the container with rice and use a sheet of coloured paper underneath the rice.
Step 2 – Practice creating letters in the writing tray
Children will love the sensory aspect of exploring the sand with their fingers, they will enjoy practicing writing letters and if the make a mistake, all they have to do is smooth over the sand with their hand and start again.
Step 3 – Play the letter game
If you have small beads that have individual letters on them you can play a fun game by asking the child to close their eyes and pick out a bead. Then they can open their eyes to find out which letter they got and they can practice that letter in the sand.
Another fun challenge is to ask the child to think of a word that starts with the letter they picked out and ask them to write the word in the sand.
