Step 1: Gather the Materials
This step can be a fun step to explore the materials and toys you may have available to you to build the project. This can include craft paper, straw, toy farm animals and toy tractors.
Step 2: Build the Base
The next step is to build a base for your project. We chose to build our project on a light coffee table purchased from Ikea. You can measure out the size of the table and cut a piece of green felt to attach to the tabletop.
Using a tabletop works great as it can act as a play table until the children are ready to move onto a new project. Alternatively you could use a plastic box if you wish to store the project away in between playtimes.
Step 3: Construct the fencing
Once you have built the base you can explore to find suitable materials to build fencing. We used drawer dividers from Ikea and we made salt dough to stand them in, or you may have plastic fencing from other toys.
Step 4: Build a pond
The pond can be created by using a selection of coloured card. You could use reflective silver card and blue card by cutting out the shape of a pond. We used salt dough around the edge of the pond and placed a selection of pebbles and stones within it.
Step 5: Lay the straw
Straw or some shredded paper and tissue paper are a great way to add some variety and texture to the project. The children will love using their own ideas to create different areas for the animals.
Step 6: Position the animals on the farm
Now it’s time to group the animals and create little areas for them to live on the farm, this is a great learning experience for young children.
Step 7: Add a tractor or vehicles
You may have tractors or other farm vehicles which will make a great addition for playtime.
Step 8: Create sensory feeding ideas
Explore your kitchen to identify sensory items that can be used to feed the animals. These will need to be selected based on ensuring the items are safe for each child’s age. We laid out mini-dishes of rice and chickpeas, in addition to mini-bowls of water.
Step 9: Time to play and feed the animals
After all their hard work building the project, children will gain great enjoyment from playing with their very own farm. There are lots of jobs to be done such as feeding the animals, giving them water and driving the tractor around to ensure all is neat and tidy on the farm!
