Step 1: Lay the base for the project
Laying the base for the project involves finding any green material that can act as a mat for the project. We had an artificial grass mat that had been used within a garden area, it was ideal as it provided an authentic look with a textured feel to play with. You will also need a selection of toy animals including jungle animals and dinosaurs.
Step 2: Cut the Christmas tree
This is the fun part! The children will love being allowed to break small branches off the Christmas tree, try to get branches of all different sizes as they will create a wide array of trees for your Christmas tree jungle.
Step 3: Plant the trees in the jungle
The trees can be positioned using playdough or your own salt dough as a base to support them. Larger branches may need extra support to stay standing, if you have a selection of stones these can be stacked around the base of the Christmas tree branches to provide extra support.
Step 4: Build up habitats within the jungle
Textured materials such as straw, sticks and stones can be used to create individual habitats within the jungle. Some areas may be hidden under trees while others may be creating borders around more open spaces.
Step 5: Group the animals
Grouping the animals is a fun matching game for children; they can build up animal families and then decide which habitat a family of animals will live in. This project is completely imaginary, so all kinds of animals can live together, including farm animals, jungle animals and dinosaurs!
Step 6: Time to play
Children will gain endless hours of fun playing with their Christmas tree jungle, a great game for children is using their imagination to decide which groups of animals may get along, and which groups of animals may go to battle over food and territory!
