Step 1: Prepare the materials
The first step is to prepare a work surface to protect against black paint. You will also need white paper card, crayons, black poster paint, paint brushes or sponges and an item with a sharp edge to scratch.
Step 2: Colour the page with wax crayons
This step can be a little time consuming as the goal is to take an A4 piece of white card and completely colour it in using wax crayons. Children may wish to colour the paper using patterns, stripes, a rainbow effect, or they may wish to colour in an abstract style.
Step 3: Paint over the A4 card with black paint
When the colouring has been completed, children will love the task of painting over the colouring with black paint. Ensure you apply the paint generously, you can apply several coats of paint if required. Continue painting until the A4 card has been completely covered in black paint.
Step 4: Scratch designs through the black paint
This step is lots of fun as the children can use an item with a sharp edge, for example a cocktail sausage stick, to scratch designs into the page. As they scratch, the black paint will be removed, revealing the vibrant colours of the wax crayons below.
Step 5: Repeat the scratch activity
The best part of this activity is that it can be repeated. Once the children have completed their designs they can choose to reuse the paper by repeating the task of painting the A4 card with black paint. Then they can create completely new scratch work. This is also a great opportunity to enable children practice with writing letters or numbers.
When the children have completed their final set of scratch artwork they can choose to leave the painting to dry and they can add their creation to their latest collection of artwork!
