Step 1 – Prepare the materials
If you choose to make your own salt dough it can be easily prepared with a simple recipe of 4 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and approximately 1 cup of water. Mix the ingredients together and knead the mixture to form a soft dough.
Step 2 – Add poster paint to colour the salt dough
Separate the salt dough into different balls, for each colour you wish to create. Once you have created separate balls of salt dough add a few drops of your chosen colour of paint to the dough and knead the paint in to create an even colour. Then store each ball of coloured salt dough in a separate container.
Step 3 – Make jewellery beads and shapes
Once you have created your coloured salt dough you can then roll the dough out to medium thickness on a board. A selection of cookie cutters can be used to make shapes which will be later used as pieces for jewellery.
To make jewellery beads, simply take a piece of salt dough and roll it out on the board similar to making a playdough snake. Then take a plastic knife and cut the salt dough into small pieces. Use your hand to gently roll each piece and then use a straw to push a hole through the salt dough to make a salt dough jewellery bead.
Step 4 – Place the jewellery pieces in the oven
Once all of the jewellery pieces have been completed lay them out on baking trays lined with parchment paper. Place the trays in the oven, and bake for approximately 20 mins at 180 degrees (they may need longer based on individual ovens), until the salt dough becomes hard. Once baked, leave the salt dough jewellery pieces to cool.
Step 5 – Use the salt dough pieces to design unique jewellery
Once the salt dough has cooled, you are ready to begin creating your jewellery pieces. Using elasticated string, children will love threading beads using different colour patterns and designing their own personalised necklaces and bracelets.
