Step 1 – Prepare the materials
If you choose to make your own salt dough it can be easily prepared with a simple recipe of 4 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and approximately 1 cup of water. Mix the ingredients together and knead the mixture to form a soft dough.
Step 2 – Roll out the salt dough
Once the salt dough has been prepared, knead the dough and use your hands to separate the salt dough into different balls of dough for each chosen colour.
Step 3 – Colour the salt dough by adding food dye
When the salt dough has been separated into different balls take each individual ball, add a few drops of food dye and then knead the colour into the dough until the colour becomes even. Alternatively you may wish to experiment with mixing food dye within the same ball of dough, or streaking the dye through the dough to create a marbled effect.
Step 4 – Create the candle holder
Selecting your chosen colour, take a small amount of salt dough and roll it into a small ball. Gently press the ball down into the board. Then take a tea light candle and gently press the candle into the salt dough. Use your fingers to mould the salt dough around the candle to create a candle holder.
Step 5 – Decorate the candle holder
Once the candle holder has been created, you can then decorate it by gently pressing in gems or beads to create a design. When you have finished decorating simply leave the candle holders to dry overnight.
Step 6 – Display the candle holders
When the salt dough has dried and becomes hard, you can chose a location to place your new candles on display!
