Step 1 – Set up the materials
The first step involves printing templates of birds for the children to colour in. We found lovely templates on www.activityvillage.co.uk. Simply print them out and cut them out of white card paper. Then set up a table with the cut-out templates and a selection of crayons and colouring pencils. You will also need a selection of coloured A4 paper for this project.
Step 2 – Design and colour the birds
Children will love this step as they can create their very own designs on the birds, they may choose a patterned design or younger children may wish to colour the birds in an array of lovely bright colours.
When each bird is complete use a paper punch to create a single hole in the middle of the bird towards the top edge. This will be used to hang the bird using ribbon.
Step 3 – Create the wings for the birds
Children will also love this step. Simply take a piece of standard coloured paper, place it in portrait orientation and fold over a strip approximately the width of a standard ruler. Then flip the paper over and fold over a strip of the same size. Once you have completed this, flip the paper over again and fold down a strip of the same size, and repeat this process until the entire page has been folded.
To add the wings to the birds, simply cut a line the same width as the strip of folded paper and feed the folded paper through. Pull the folded paper through the slit until there is an even amount on each side of the paper bird. Children will enjoy creating colour schemes by matching the colours in the folded wings to the designs within their paper birds.
Step 4 – Hang the birds in a display area
Once the paper birds have been completed you can choose ribbon to feed through the paper punch hole and hang the birds from a location of your choice. Children will love gently tapping them, and watching their colours move as the paper birds glide through the air!
