Step 1: Prepare the materials
You will need to prepare a few simple materials including a large cardboard toilet roll, an empty tissue paper box and coloured paper.
Step 2: Paint the toilet rolls
The toilet roll will be used as the neck of the guitar. You may choose to cover it with coloured paper, or alternatively the children can choose to paint their own designs with poster paints. If painting, on completion leave the toilet roll to dry.
Step 3: Prepare the triangular mounts
The next step is to prepare triangle shaped mounts from paper card which will be glued onto the tissue paper box.
Cut a rectangle of card to a similar width as the tissue paper box. Then fold the rectangle into three horizontal sections, which when folded will create a triangular shape.
Use sellotape to tape the triangular mounts together. This will later be used to hold the rubber bands in place for the strings of the guitar.
Step 4: Cover the tissue paper box
The next step is to cut out wrapping paper and cover the tissue paper box with the wrapping paper using glue. Once the tissue paper box is covered, an adult can use a cutting knife to gently cut out the wrapping paper against the hole of the tissue paper box.
Step 5: Attach the triangle mounts
Once the tissue paper box has been covered you can then glue the triangular mounts above and below the hole within the tissue paper box.
Step 6: Attach the toilet roll
The next step is to attach the toilet roll, which was previously painted, as the neck of the guitar. You can do this using tape or by using a glue gun.
Step 7: Attach the rubber bands
The final step is to take a selection of rubber bands in different colours and stretch them around the length of the tissue paper box. The rubber bands will act as they strings.
Step 8: Time to make music
Once your guitar has been completed it’s time to enjoy your first strumming exercise, gently pull at the rubber bands to explore the different sounds your new musical guitar instrument can make!
