Step 1: Prepare the materials
You can use a tin or a large circular container to create the drum. Once washed out, a baby formula tin will work perfectly. For the top of the drum you can choose to use a large balloon or duct tape. We decided to make two drums using a different material for each one which would enable us to compare the different sounds.
Step 2: Cover the top of the drum
If you are using a balloon, cut the top of the balloon off with a scissors and stretch the balloon over the tin. Hold the balloon in place and secure it onto the tin with sellotape.
If you are using duct tape, stretch pieces of duct tape across the top of the tin and secure on either side. Repeat this process until the top of the tin is completely covered.
Step 3: Cover the tin
Once the top of the tin has been covered, select coloured paper of your choice, then using a ruler and pencil mark out the correct size. Cut the paper with a scissors and then glue it onto the tin.
Step 4: Decorate the tin
Children will love decorating their drums, using a variety of materials, to suit their own personal style.
Step 5: Test the sound
Once your drum is complete children will love tapping out their favourite tunes on their new personalised musical drum instrument!
