Step 1 – Prepare the materials
The materials are really easy to set-up for this project. The first step is to print out some Halloween templates for the pumpkin faces and Halloween silhouettes (for witches, bats and a haunted house). There are lots of printable templates on the internet, we found great templates on www.activityvillage.co.uk . You will also need paper plates, a selection of poster paints, and green wool or green tissue paper.
Step 2 – Paint the plates
The next step is to paint the background for each plate. We created three different types of plates:
• A pumpkin: We painted the background for the plate orange.
• A Halloween scene: We chose two styles, one was painted yellow with orange streaks, and the other was swirling purple colours for the background.
• A witch: We painted the background for the plate purple.
You can choose to paint the plates using either a sponge or paint brush. It can be fun to experiment with different effects such as dabbing the sponge in different colours and patting it on the plate. Paint brushes can also be used to achieve a streaked effect. Once the children have completed painting the plates, they can be left aside to dry.
Step 3 – Stick on the templates
When the plates are dry, craft glue can be used to stick the cut-out Halloween templates on. Children can create their own designs for the following:
- A pumpkin: Children can create their own pumpkin faces by choosing a combination of eyes and mouth designs.
- A Halloween scene: Children can create a Halloween scene using silhouettes such as a witch on a broomstick or a haunted house.
- A witch: The witches hair can be created from wool or green tissue paper. Then children can stick on a cut-out hat and eyes and you can choose to draw a nose with a marker.
Step 4 – Display your finished work
The final step is to display your finished work. A hole punch can be used to place a hole in each plate which can then be threaded with twine for hanging up in order to decorate the house to create a fun Halloween atmosphere!
