Step 1 – Gather the materials
The materials that are required for this project can be easily sourced. You will need some coloured paper or card, a scissors, Sellotape, twine and some bamboo plant supports that can be found in most hardware or garden shops.
Step 2 – Cut the plant supports
Take a bamboo plant support and break it or cut it into two pieces. One piece will be used in a horizontal position and one will be used in a vertical position. The horizontal piece will be shorter than the vertical piece. You could choose to match the width and height dimensions of an A4 piece of paper or you may chose to make the kit bigger.
Step 3 – Tie the two pieces of bamboo together
Place the longest piece of bamboo in a vertical position and place the shorter piece of bamboo on top in a horizontal position. Using twine, carefully wind the twine underneath and around the two pieces of bamboo in a figure of eight motion. When the two pieces of bamboo have been bound together, cut and tie the twine.
Step 4 – Create a frame of twine around
An adult will need to complete this step. The objective of this step is to place twine around each end of the bamboo sticks in order to cerate a frame for the kite. This can be easily achieved using a hot glue gun, simply place hot glue on the end of each bamboo stick and thread the twine around to make a frame.
Step 5 – Cover the kite in coloured paper
Children will love carrying out this step as they can design their kite to suit their own creative style. They can choose any selection of coloured paper and simply wrap the paper around the kite frame and attach it using Sellotape. Children may wish to decorate their kite with accessories such as stickers or by adding their own drawing designs. Finally they may wish to make streamers by cutting strips from coloured paper tissue and attaching them on with glue or Sellotape.
Step 6 – Use twine to create a kite line
Cut a long piece of twine which will act as the kit string. Find where the two bamboo sticks interconnect and tie the twine securely around them, leaving a long string of twine trailing out which will act as the kite line.
Step 7 – Time for a test flight!
The most fun part of this project for children is testing their kite designs! You will need an outdoor space and some wind to test if your kite can take flight, it’s time for children to run as fast as you can trailing your kite behind you in the hope that it takes flight!
