Step 1 – Prepare the materials
The first step is to gather a selection of materials to make the scrunchies. Scrunchies can be made any size but make sure the fabric has enough length to scrunch together around an elastic band.
Step 2 – Cut the material
Using a pencil mark out the length and width of you scrunchies. Base the width by folding the material in half and choosing how wide you want your scrunchy to be. However, make sure to add extra to the width to allow for sewing. Once you have decided on the width, use a scissors to cut along the line you have marked out in pencil.
Step 3 – Sew two sides of the material together
Once your material has been cut into a long rectangular strip, fold the material in half, placing the pattern-sides (the right sides) facing together. The next step is to place the material in the sewing machine and sew a straight line down the edge of the two sides that you wish to attach together.
Step 4 – Turn the material inside out
When you have completed sewing the two sides together, turn the material inside out so that the pattern or right side is then facing outwards. This task is a bit tricky as the material which has been sewed now resembles a tube so you need to use your fingers to gradually feed the material through until the correct side is facing outwards.
Step 5 – Thread elastic through the scrunchy
Once the material is correctly facing outwards, the next step is to cut a piece of elastic and thread it through the scrunchy. The best way to thread the elastic through is by attaching the top of the elastic to a large safety pin and then feeding the safety pin through with you fingers. When you pull the safety pin out at the other end you can either tie the start and end points of the elastic together or join them by stitching them with a needle and thread.
Step 6 – Sew the start and end points of the scrunchie to enclose the fabric
First, evenly space the scrunchy out around the elastic. Then finish the scrunchy by tucking the raw edges of the start and end points of the fabric together and bind them together with a top stitch using a needle and thread.
