Step 1 – Experiment with mixing different shades of blue paint
The theme of this project is “Winter Snowflakes” so we decided to use only shades of blue paint. This is a great way for children to learn about working with various shades of one colour. They can use different shades of blue and white paint to make a beautiful themed paining scene. By using both white and blue paper the children can paint their own concepts and ideas.
Step 2 – Find Christmas decorations to use as a collage
It is a great idea to search for alternative materials to use for painting projects such as this one. We went exploring and found a selection of light Christmas tree decorations, some Christmas present tags, craft stars and coloured stones.
Provide each child with a tub of craft glue and they can experiment applying the alternative materials to their painting. They will learn that some items may be too heavy to stick but lighter items such as the craft stars easily stick onto their paintings.
Step 3 – Add glitter for some festive sparkle
For some festive sparkle, first apply craft glue to a painting and then sprinkle some glitter on. Following this shake any excess glitter off the page.
Step 5 – Use a craft paper punch to create a star border
If you have a craft punch, you can create a border of star shapes. We created the border on blue coloured paper and then glued the page onto a sheet of red paper to create a beautiful border of red stars.
Step 6 – Combine your paintings to make a collage
The final step is to present your work. Each painting can be positioned to complement each other. If you have a cork notice board the paintings can be easily attached to create a collage which can then be displayed on a wall to decorate your home for the Christmas season!
