Step 1 – Gather the materials
The first step is to gather the materials. You will need a small and medium pom-pom maker, yellow wool, a small piece of orange paper, foam or felt to create a beak and feet, and googly eyes or black paper to create eyes.
Step 2 – Wrap the small pom-pom maker in wool
The small pom-pom maker will be used to create the chick’s head and the medium pom-pom maker will be used to create the chick’s body.
Place the two sides of the small pom-pom maker together; starting with the first side, begin to wrap the yellow wool from left to right. When you reach the right-hand side, begin to wrap the wool backwards from the right-hand side to the left-hand side. Continue to repeat these steps until the side is completely covered in yellow wool.
When one side of the pom-pom maker is complete, cut the wool and carry out the same steps to complete the other side. When both sides have been completed clasp the pom-pom maker together so that it makes a closed circle.
Step 3 – Wrap the medium pom-pom maker in wool
When you have completed the small pom-pom maker, carry out the same steps to fully cover the medium pom-pom maker in yellow wool. When this task has been completed clasp the pom-pom maker so that it makes a closed circle.
Step 4 – Cut the wool along the middle line
Starting with the small pom-pom maker, carefully hold your completed circle and begin to cut in between the two sides of the pom-pom maker with a scissors. The wool will spring apart, and you will see the shape of your pom-pom beginning to form a ball shape.
Repeat this step for both sides. When you have completed this task for the small pom-pom maker, carry out the same steps for the medium pom-pom maker.
Step 5 – Tie a piece of wool around the middle of the pom-pom
The next step is to tie a piece of wool around the centre of each pom-pom maker – wrap a long piece of wool around the middle of the pom-pom maker and tie it tightly in a secure knot.
Step 6 – Remove the pom-pom makers
When your pom-poms are complete, the next step is to unclasp the pom-pom makers and remove them from the pom-poms. Using your hands, gently roll the pom-poms to make round fluffy shapes. Do not cut the long piece of wool as you will use this to tie the two pom-poms together.
Step 7 – Tie the head and the body together
Using the long piece of wool which is attached to each pom-pom, tie the head and the body of the chick securely together and then cut off the excess wool.
Step 8 – Create a beak, feet and eyes
Once the head and the body of the chick have been attached, the next step is to create a beak, feet and eyes. The feet and beak can be easily achieved using any orange paper or fabric that you may have.
Cut out simple feet shapes for the chick along with a triangle for a beak. You may choose to use googly eyes or simply create small circles on paper with black marker and cut them out. Attach the beak, feet and eyes using craft glue or a glue gun.
Step 9 – Find a home for your chick
The final step is to find a suitable home for you new cute and cuddly Easter chick. Your chick would make the perfect table decoration for Easter dinner, or would also make the perfect accessory to join the Easter hunt adventures in the children’s Easter baskets!
