Step 1 – Create a salt dough recipe and cut shapes
If you choose to make your own salt dough it can be easily prepared with a simple recipe of 4 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and approximately 1 cup of water. Mix the ingredients together and knead the mixture to form a soft dough.
Sprinkle a board with extra flour and lay the ball of dough on it. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out along the flat surface, it is now ready to be used for cutting out shapes with a selection of festive cookie cutters.
Step 2 – Place the ornaments in the cooker
Once the shapes have been created, use a straw to create a small hole at the top of each shape. This will provide a hole to hang ribbon through if you wish to hang your decorations up. Once this is complete, lay each shape separately on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Place the tray in the oven for approximately 20mins at 180 degrees.
Step 3 – Leave ornaments to cool before painting
Once the ornaments have been cooked leave them to stand and cool. Then it is time to choose which ornaments you wish to paint.
Step 4 – Paint the ornaments
Using a selection of acrylic paints, gently paint the ornaments with a paintbrush. If using multiple colours and designs you can leave one layer of paint to dry and then return to paint designs over it.
Step 5 – Experiment with design
Try experimenting with the paint by mixing different colours and adding glitter to the mix. This can then be applied with the paint brush to achieve a marble effect.
Step 6 – Lay the ornaments out to dry
When the painting and design has been completed lay the ornaments out individually on a baking tray again. Leave them overnight to allow the paint to dry. Once they are dry, ribbon or string can be used to tie a hanging loop using the holes within each ornament.
Step 7 – Display the Christmas ornaments
The final step is to find an eye catching location to hang up and display the ornaments. They will look great on the Christmas tree or alternatively they can be hung on indoor plants or display areas. Either way they will add endless festive sparkle to your home!
