Step 1 – Prepare the materials
There is a bit of work involved in sourcing the materials for this project. For the head, we used a flatpack cardboard box, and for the body and sleeves we used lightweight white boxes which we purchased in the storage department in Ikea. For the hands we used empty tissue paper boxes. Once you have sourced your boxes you will need to prepare the blue and green coloured paper by cutting the sheets into medium sized squares, this can be done using a scissors or a paper cutter machine.
Step 2 – Prepare the cardboard body
The next step is to prepare the cardboard body for the project. The Ikea box we used had a zip, so we unzipped the bottom of the box and used a paper blade to cut a rectangle out of the base. This meant that a child could easily place the box over their head and it would sit comfortably on their shoulders.
Step 3 – Create the sleeves
We used a paper blade to cut a square shape out of each side of the box, ensuring we cut the holes at the correct height to allow for arms to be comfortably placed through them. Following this we cut holes in the base of the two smaller white boxes which we also sourced from the storage department in Ikea. Once the holes were cut we glued the smaller white boxes onto each side using a glue gun.
Step 4 – Decorate the body
This is a really fun step for children; they can help to cover the entire body of the costume in craft glue. We choose shades of blue and pale green for the body of the costume. Individually place the coloured paper, which has already been prepared into squares, onto the box. Children will love creating their very own Minecraft pattern.
Step 5 – Make the head of the costume
We sourced a flatpack cardboard box from Ikea and assembled it for the head of the costume. Using a pencil, sketch shapes for the eyes and mouth. There is a bit of guesswork involved to get the spacing correct. One option is to start out with a white piece of paper and sketch out the eyes and mouth and test it as a paper face mask. Then place the white sheet of paper onto the cardboard box and sketch the correct locations onto the box. Finally cut out the shapes using a paper blade.
We chose shades of green for the head of the costume. Cover the cardboard box for the head in glue and stick on the coloured square paper, following the same steps that were carried out to complete the body of the costume.
Step 6 – Make the hands for the costume
Tissue paper boxes work really well for the hands as you don’t need to do any cutting, the hands can simply be placed through the hole of the tissue paper box. We chose shades of green for the hands. Cover the boxes in glue and stick on the coloured square paper using a similar pattern to that used for the head. Once the boxes for the hands have been complete, you may choose to attach them to the sleeves with a piece of twine.
Step 7 – Time to play
Now that the full costume is complete it’s time to play!
