Step 1 – Cut windows out of a cardboard box
The first step involves finding a suitable cardboard box. On each of the four sides of the box, use a ruler and a pencil to draw the outline of a window shape and cut out the window with a scissors.
Step 2 – Paint the flower box
Any poster paint can be used and this step is great for children of all ages as they can use a sponge to paint their flower box any colour they choose.
Step 3 – Collect flowers from the garden
While waiting for the paint to dry, a fun activity is to explore the garden or an outdoor setting to find a selection of flowers and leaves that can be used for the flower box. Gently remove the petals from the flowers and place them in a container.
Step 4 – Apply contact paper to the windows within the box
You will need contact paper for this step. Using contact paper, cut rectangle shapes which are slightly larger than the size of the windows. You will need one piece of contact paper for each window. Peel off the top layer of the contact paper and carefully stick the contact paper to the edges of the windows, ensuring the sticky side of the contact paper is facing outwards.
Step 5 – Attach flower petals to the contact paper
The children can use their creativity to produce beautiful designs on the contact paper by gently attaching the flower petals and leaves to the sticky side of the window. Petal colours can be grouped to form patterns or a mixed collage.
Step 6 – Apply outer layer of contact paper
When the children have completed the petal design, an adult can use the contact paper to cut a rectangular shape to match the exact size of the window. If you peel off the outer layer of the contact paper and gently attach the sticky side facing inwards, you will seal off each window of flowers.
Step 7 – Decorate the box
The final step involves decorating the box with a selection of stickers or glitter pens to create a truly unique design. Once the box is complete, try placing it close to a window and the light will shine through it to create a wonderful array of vibrant colours!
