Step 1 – Prepare the materials
This project is very easy to set up, all you need is a box or a cardboard tray to act as a base for the project, white felt, a pencil, scissors and ruler. If you have small cardboard boxes, toilet rolls and a paper plate these can be made into houses and an ice-skating rink, and the children may choose to add their own ideas too!
You will also need a Christmas mini-figure set, and you may decide to add some lighting such as fairy lights and LED tea-lights. Amazon has an excellent selection of Christmas miniature ornament kits and lights which are perfect for craft projects such as this Christmas Tree Village, click on the links below to find the best items to suit your project!
Step 2 – Build the base
Building the base is really simple, you will need a box or a cardboard tray which will act as a base and then simply line it with white felt. If you don’t have white felt you could choose white paper with a sprinkle of silver glitter to give it a snowy affect!
Step 3 – Add houses
If you can find small cardboard boxes and toilet rolls, children will love the simple task of painting them white. Using a sponge works great as the task can be achieved quickly and they can be left to dry. Once they are dry an adult can complete the next step of creating windows and doors using a scissors or paper blade.
When the houses are complete children can create roofs for them by roughly cutting out the shape of the roof from white felt, or alternatively you could use cotton wool to create snow capped roof tops!
Step 4 – Create an Ice Skating Rink
Adding an ice-skating rink will create a really fun feature for the children to play with. It can be easily made by taking a paper plate and covering it in tinfoil. You may also have some mini white foam balls for crafts that would add a snowy effect!
Children will love choosing their favourite spots to place the snowmen – the ice-skating rink may be an ideal spot!
Step 5 – Add a river feature
If you have a selection of stones, you can build a river feature. Simply create a straight line of natural stones to represent the embankment and then create the effect of water by using blue and sliver decorative stones. Alternatively you could achieve a river effect by using blue paper or felt and adding a sprinkle of silver glitter to create the impression of rippling water!
Step 6 – Add Christmas trees
Children will thoroughly enjoying designing and building their village by placing glistening Christmas trees throughout the village!
Step 7 – Create a Christmas Tree Village Signpost
No village is compete without a signpost! You can make a simple sign using white and red paper. The next step is to glue the sign onto two lollipop sticks. Then place the ends of the lollipop sticks in a small piece of playdough which will secure the signpost to enable it to stand. Add a little glitter and your signpost is complete!
Step 8 – Time to light up the village
String fairy lights can easy be placed around the village and will add a wonderful sparkling lighting effect. If you have LED tea light candles these can also be a great and safe way to add light to craft projects. You may choose to place them inside the cardboard houses. The flickering lights will give the effect of a wood burning stove lighting within the houses and will create a lovely and warm festive atmosphere!
Step 9 – Time for Santa’s visit
Of course the village will not be complete without a visit from Santa and his sleigh! Santa will have a wonderful time visiting Christmas Tree Village. He may choose to land on the roof tops and after he has completed his great work of delivering all of the presents to the children in the village, he may decide to have some fun on the ice-skating rink before he has to leave again!
