Materials: |
Glass jars |
White flowers |
A scissors or knife |
Food dye and water |
Step 1: Set up the glass jars
The first step requires you to set up a selection of glass jars and to fill them with water.
Step 2: Prepare the flowers
Gather the flowers you have chosen to use for your project, we chose a selection of white carnations. Younger children will need the assistance of an adult to cut the stem of each white flower diagonally.
Step 3: Add a different colour of food dye to each jar
Within each glass jar pace a few drops of food dye. Children will also enjoy mixing the food dye to make different colours within each jar.
Step 4: Place a white flower in each jar
After the flowers have been prepared and the stem has been cut, place a single flower in each jar of coloured water.
Step 5: Leave the flowers in the coloured water
Leave the flowers in the coloured water and over the next few days, observe the coloured water starting to change the colour of the white flowers.
Some colours may work better than others. Older children may enjoy writing the results in an experiment copy. They can learn how to draw conclusions with regards to which colours worked more effectively in the process of changing the colour of the flowers.
