Step 1: Set up the materials
White light is made up of all the colours of the visible spectrum, including all the shades in between. The colours of the visible spectrum are as follows:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
These are in fact the colours of the rainbow! Rainbows display seven colours because water droplets break white sunlight into the seven colours of the visible spectrum.
In this project, we use the colours of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet) to make a colour wheel. When the wheel is complete, we can spin it like a disk and watch in wonder as all the colours magically disappear to make white light!
To set up the project you will need white paper card, coloured paper card to match the colours of the rainbow, craft glue, a paper punch and twine.
Step 2: Create and label a cardboard circle
The next step is to cut a circle out of cardboard; a breakfast bowl can be used to trace the shape of a large circle. Using a marker, draw lines to denote seven equal segments on the circular card.
Once this has been competed you can write the names of the seven colours of the rainbow on the card.
Step 2: Cut the seven segments in each colour of the rainbow
The next step is to cut the seven segments, in each colour of the rainbow, out of coloured card. The coloured card can then be neatly laid out along with the white wheel and craft glue.
Step 3: Glue the coloured paper onto the cardboard circle
Children will enjoy this step as they need to match the coloured segments with the correct name and glue the coloured paper onto the white cardboard wheel.
Step 4: Punch two holes in the circle and thread twine through
Once all of the coloured card has been glued onto the wheel correctly, punch two holes through the wheel, close to the center. These holes will be used to thread twine through in order to spin the colour wheel.
Thread twine or wool through one hole, loop it around and thread it back through the second hole. Then take the starting point and finish point and tie them together to complete the loop. Gently pull the loop so that it has an equal length on both sides of the wheel.
Step 5: Spin the circle like a disk and watch the fascinating results
The final step is the fun part! Pick up the colour wheel by holding each end of the loop in each hand. Then move both hands forwards in a circular motion; continue this motion and speed it up until the point where the colour wheel is spinning like a disk. Then you will see how the colours of the wheel magically disappear to make white light!
