Step 1: Prepare the materials
The first step is setting up the materials . You will need a large sheet of white card or paper, a pencil, ruler and rubber and crayons or colouring pencils. You will also need counters and dice to play the game.
Step 2: Design the board
Children can work together as a team to devise a plan for the design of the game. First they need to decide how many numbers will be on the board. We decided that 100 numbers would be a good fit for the paper size that we had.
The next step is to calculate how many rows and columns will fit on the board. For example, you may decide to have 5 rows consisting of 20 numbers per row which will make 100 – the children will love working out the maths!
Step 3: Mark out the squares on the board
An older child may take the lead in marking out the board. By taking a measurement of the height of the paper and dividing it by 5 they can calculate the height of each row.
Similarly by taking the width of the paper and dividing it by 20 they can calculate the width of each column.
The rows and columns can then be marked out using a ruler and pencil, resulting in a square for each number of the board.
Step 4: Number the squares
The next step is to number each square on the board from 1 to 100, again this offers a great opportunity to practice number writing.
Step 5: Design the snakes and the ladders
The next step is to design the board in such a way that there are multiple snakes and multiple ladders. If a player lands on a snake, they must travel down it to the bottom number. If the player lands on a ladder, they get to advance up the ladder to the higher number.
Children may also wish to add in their own concepts such as bonus squares where they get an extra go or bad luck squares where they are required to miss a go.
Step 6: Colour the board
The next step is to colour in the board to make it fun and exciting. Younger children will love helping with this step by making their own contribution to the game.
Step 7: It’s time to play
Once the snakes and ladder board has been completed it’s time to play! All you need are some counters and a dice and everyone can join in the fun!
