Step 1: Assemble the materials
You may choose to use an art canvas to paint on but if you would prefer to use paper you can use any size or type of paper that you feel would work best.
You will also need a pencil, rubber, a selection of acrylic paints laid out within individual containers and a few paint brushes ranging in size from small to large.
If you have a flat paint brush this will work well for painting the tree trunk. The final item you will need is a standard kitchen sponge cut into squares.
Step 2: Sketch the outline of the tree
Older children will love this step or alternatively an adult can assist younger children to learn how to draw the outline of a tree trunk leading out to a network of branches.
Step 3: Paint the tree trunk
This is a great project where children can work together as a team. This step requires the children to paint the trunk and the branches of the tree brown.
One child could paint the base of the truck with a flat paint brush and another child could add texture by using a small paint brush to gently paint lines or ridges in a darker brown. Once the truck and branches have been completed you can leave the painting to dry for a few minutes.
Step 4: Create the blossoms for the tree using sponges
The next step is so much fun, all you have to do is get a clean sponge, dip it within one colour of paint, and gently dap the sponge at the end of each tree branch to create the effect of a cherry blossom tree.
You can choose a particular colour scheme or children may wish to simply use all the colours of the rainbow! Again, this is a great step for children to work together on the same painting as using different colours and sponges will add more depth and vibrancy to the painting.
Step 5: Add grass and final details to the painting
The final step is to add some grass to the base of the tree. Sponges and green paint can be used, and extra detail of long blades of grass can be added using a fine paint brush and a darker shade of green.
Step 6: Display the final piece
When the tree is completed it is ready to be displayed as a wall painting or in a location of your choice, and the children can sign their names as finishing touches!
