Project Summary:
This Easter and Spring vocabulary game is a lovely activity for young children. Setting up a vocabulary table is a great way to give children the opportunity to learn the application of written words through exploration – by seeking out real objects that represent the words and designing a beautiful display table.
Project Details: Easter and Spring Vocabulary Game
Materials: |
Flash cards with images representing Easter and Spring concepts |
Flash cards with words that match the image cards |
A table top to work on |
Objects that represent that images on the flash cards |
Step 1 – Prepare the materials
The first step is to prepare a set of flash card pictures and matching words that represent Easter and Spring concepts, we found a good selection of printable cards on www.activityvillage.co.uk. Separate the flash cards into two piles: one containing the pictures and the other containing the words. Give the children the pile of flash cards that contain the images.
Step 2 – Gather objects to represent the images on the cards
The children will have lots of fun exploring to find objects that represent the images on the cards. They may be items from nature, such fresh flowers collected from outside, or they may be selected from toys or other objects from their indoor environment.
Step 3 – Design the display table
The next step is to design a display table, children will love creating their own Easter scene using all of the objects and nature items that they have collected. They can then lay the corresponding image card in front of each item on the table.
Step 4 -Assign the word cards
The final step is to give the children the deck of word cards. Ask them to carefully look at each card and to try and “sound out” the word. Then ask them to place the word in front of the item that they think the word represents.
It’s lovely to leave the display table in place for Easter as children will love playing the game again and as they become more familiar with the words, they will become much quicker at placing them in the correct locations!
