Step 1 – Prepare the materials
If you choose to make your own salt dough it can be easily prepared with a simple recipe of 4 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and approximately 1 cup of water. Mix the ingredients together and knead the mixture to form a soft dough.
Step 2 – Roll out the salt dough
Once the mixture forms a dough, place the dough on a board and roll it out with a rolling pin. Aim for a medium thickness to allow for children to push their handprint into the dough.
Step 3 – Create a hand imprint
This is the fun part! Children can firmly press their hand into the salt dough to create a handprint. It may take a few attempts as the dough may be rolled to thinly, you may have to start over and roll the dough again but the children will have lots of fun in the process. When you are happy with the handprint, you can then use a knife to cut a circular shape around the handprint.
If you wish to hang the handprint as an ornament you can create a hole by using a straw, which can later be used to thread ribbon through for hanging.
Step 4 – Decorate the handprint
Once the handprint has been completed, children can then use decorative gems and buttons to decorate around the handprint. Simply push the gems or buttons into the salt dough and they will be held in place. When they have completed decorating around the handprint, you can leave the ornament to airdry (it may take a few days for the salt dough to go hard due to its thickness).
Step 5 – Paint the handprint
Once the salt dough is completely dry you can paint the handprint in your chosen colour, this will make the handprint stand out within the ornament. Then you can thread some ribbon through the hole that was previously created and your handprint ornament is complete!
