Step 1 – Prepare the materials
You need a few basic materials including coloured paper in the colours of the Irish flag: green, white and orange. You will also need a pencil, ruler, scissors and a stapler or sellotape.
Step 2 – Cut the coloured paper into strips
Take a sheet of green coloured paper, use a ruler and pencil to mark a large horizontal strip which outlines the height of the hat. Use a scissors to cut the strip out.
Then take 3 sheets of coloured paper together: one green, one white and one orange. Using a pencil and ruler, mark out two strips, approximately the width of the ruler, that run along the entire length of the page. Use a scissors, hold the three different coloured sheets together and to cut out the two strips. Now gather the three colours for one strip together in your hand and again use the scissors to cut the strip into three sections: each section will represent one of the three leaves of the shamrock. Repeat this step for the second strip. You have now completed the preparation of the paper for the hat.
Step 3 – Staple the base of the hat
Take the base of the hat: the wide strip of green paper, measure it to ensure an accurate fit and then staple the paper to make a circular shape which will act as the base of the hat.
Step 4 – Assemble the paper shamrocks
Once the base of the hat has been created, the next step is to assemble the paper shamrock. To do this hold three pieces of the small paper strips that were prepared earlier (using one of each colour: green, white and orange). Bend the paper over and hold it with your fingers; repeat this process for each of the three sections of the shamrock and then use a stapler to staple the three sections together to make the shamrock.
Repeat these steps to make a second shamrock and then staple one paper shamrock to each side of the hat.
Step 4 – Time to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day
Your hat is now complete and ready to wear for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities!
