Step 1 – Set up materials for the fish collage
The first step is to set up the materials for the project. The fish collage will look great within a frame. You may have pre-cut cardboard frames from old photo frames or alternatively you can make one of your own from paper card. You will also need a selection of coloured A4 paper for this project. Once you have chosen the size of the frame you can cut pieces of colour paper to match the size.
You can then set up containers with a selection of materials for the children to work with; these can include coloured paper cut into strips, pieces of coloured tissue paper and foam stickers.
When creating the fish for the collage, children may choose to draw the fish themselves or alternatively you can print templates for fish and children will love colouring them in. We found lovely fish templates on www.activityvillage.co.uk which we printed and the children cut the fish out with a scissors.
Step 2 – Design and create the fish collage
The second step is fully driven by the children; they can choose the colour of their backing and then begin the creative process by choosing the materials and techniques for their collage. Using a combination of colouring, cutting and sticking on a selection of materials will create a wonderfully vibrant collage.
Step 3 – Hang the fish collage as a window display
The final step is to help the children to attach the frame to their finished work. If you hang the collage in a window or place it on a bright windowsill the light will shine through to highlight the beautiful array of colours to brighten up even a rainy day!
